Rif: Avigliana Ferrata – Castle Avigliana is one of the oldest castles in Piedmont (X century). Currently in ruins, is located at Avigliana entrance of Val di Susa, 25 km from the capital Turin. The castle was built in 924 by the Marquis of Turin Arduin Glaber. Of massive structure and with high towers, developed easily due to its location (it was the last bastion before Turin for those coming from France) undergoing centuries numerous destruction and looting. In 1137 the building is documented as one of the favorite locations by the Count of Savoy Amadeus III. After the fifteenth century until its destruction the castle, over the period of the splendor of the court of Savoy, took mainly the function of the fortress of the lower Val di Susa. Destroyed and rebuilt several times always the castle was destroyed by the use of mines for the last time by the French troops of Marshal Catinat in May 1691. He had no way to be rebuilt because of the changed strategic situation in the area. Currently only remain the ruins of the manor. The castle is located on top of Mount Pezzulano just above the town of Avigliana, and is easily accessible from the heart of the medieval old town of Avigliana (Piazza Conte Rosso) through a short path.
