Casa Y takes up the archetype of the Piedmontese farmhouse by recovering the typical planimetric development with a simple sleeve and linear distribution. A brutalist architecture resulting from the study of a well-known architectural firm, rigorous and minimal, blends into a low-energy impact residential project. A parallelepiped embedded in the ground to follow the hilly morphology, a simple volume in which a second element jutting out over the valley is inserted perpendicularly. The comparison between architecture and landscape is a founding element of the project. Compositional intensity, hard and concrete volumes, simplicity in the choice of materials, pure forms in concrete and iron do not clash with the environment, but manage to combine a strong architectural identity in a constant dialogue with nature. The compact forms open up with cuts and windows onto the woods, inviting the gaze to wander over the surrounding panorama, folding in on itself and opening towards the external space, materiality and light. The choice to completely bury the south side favors the integration of the building into the context and optimizes its energy containment. The structure is composed of a shell in exposed reinforced concrete, entirely covered with a coat of insulating material. The house, facing south-southeast, is in the optimal condition to exploit solar radiation. The entirely glazed south facade (90% of the building’s glazed surface) is protected by a system of continuous fixed sunshade elements in cor-ten steel, appropriately sized to allow the winter sun to penetrate inside the building and block the sun’s rays in the summer. The structure can be opened in sections to allow more effective radiation. The building is on two levels joined by a single-flight staircase, sculptural geometry, pure volume suspended from the floor slab. On the ground floor there are spaces dedicated to social life: a large open space area brings together the dining room, open kitchen and living room which find their focal point in the large window of the terrace. The backbone of the building is the long corridor on the north side which, illuminated by a skylight along its entire length, connects the living area to the three bedrooms. Each bedroom has its own “salle d’eau” / bathroom and an exit to the garden. By opening the brise-soleil element it is also possible to create three distinct and private areas for the bedrooms. The lower basement floor houses the accessory functions: the rooms dedicated to the children as well as the library, the study, the technical rooms and the garage for several cars (80 m2). These areas exploit the sunlight that penetrates through a light shaft that becomes the fulcrum of the distribution of the rooms. The choice of materials was also dictated by their particular physical-technical characteristics, such as not to require specific protection and finishing interventions. Thus the cor-ten steel, the reinforced concrete and the wood of the formwork that did not require any treatment or like the elm wood and the Vicenza stone, for the finishing of the floors, treated with oil. Next to the building, a simple parallelepiped of water reflects the landscape; without edges and completely inserted into the ground, the pool disappears from the gaze of those who dive in, leaving space only for water and nature. The bio-pool is equipped with a movable bottom system that allows you to choose the depth of the water basin. This system ensures energy savings and reduced maintenance: the closure of the pool with the isolated movable bottom allows you to keep the water in the absence of light, blocking and controlling the development of algae, significantly reducing energy consumption due to the use of filtering and purification pumps. The “water lane” is a natural pool that uses a biological filtering process, allowing you to swim in absolutely natural water without the addition of any substance or chemical product. Approximately 1100 m2 of garden. Cost of approximately 800 euros per year for heating including electricity and water. Volumetric and perimeter burglar alarm. New heat pump. Electricity production from 19KW photovoltaic panels and 30 KW storage. Water production for heating and DHW with 12KW inverter air-water heat pump. Mechanized air exchange with high-efficiency VMC. Rainwater collection and recovery system reused for toilet flushing, washing machine loading and for irrigation of the vegetable garden and garden: 10 cubic meters. LED lighting system with total power 2 W/m2. A unique property, located in a hilly context a few km from the city of Turin.
