Description

"Cristo Re" Institute in Erba, Como.Erba is an Italian town in the province of Como in Lombardy. The town is located at the foot of the Lombard Prealps at 320 m a.s.l., in Brianza and is located in the homonymous Piano d'Erba. It is crossed by the Bova torrent and the Lambro river. Part of the shores of Lake Pusiano and Lake Alserio are included in the territory. The origin of the various villages that later gave birth to Erba is quite ancient. The place was in fact inhabited in epochs preceding the Roman one; the Orobi, the Ligurians and the Celts would have alternated there. The discovery of some flint tools near the Buco del Piombo suggests that the area was already inhabited by man around 30000 BC It is known that from Herba, the Latin name of Erba, both the via Mediolanum-Bellasium, the which connected Milan with Bellagio, both the road that, from Aquileia, passing through Como, led to Rezia. During the struggles between the municipalities and the Empire, the inhabitants of Erba sided with Milan, obtaining its citizenship in 1160. From the thirteenth to the sixteenth century the territory of today's municipality of Erba was part of the dominion of the Visconti first and then of the Sforza, with the latter who granted it as a fief first to the Dal Verme and then to the Fregoso. The property in Erba, called "Christ the King" owned by the Religious Order, is located in via di Crotto Rosa 2-11, in the upper area of Erba, a short distance from the historic center "Contrada Villincino". The building was purchased by the institute in the late 1950s and over the years for use as a rest home for nuns. In the years to come, a whole series of improvement works were carried out: construction of the lift system; construction of new rooms with installation of hydro-thermal and sanitary systems; construction of a new thermal power station; roof refurbishment with complete replacement of the tiles; paving of the avenues and arrangement of the entrance and garden; refurbishment of the kitchen, construction of cold rooms. To reach the 90s where general works were carried out for fire prevention adaptation, complete refurbishment of the boilers and various extraordinary maintenance works that have followed one another over the years until today. The building develops in the upper part of Erba on a hilly area; and has four floors, one of which is a basement overlooking the city and a view of particular value that looks from the terraced garden below (with more than 10,000 square meters of park) to Lake Pusiano. The building with a gross surface area greater than 3,000 sq m (3,236 sq m in the cadastre) is built mainly in load-bearing masonry and substantially divided into two parts connected on via di Crotto Rosa by a covered passage on the first floor that arches over the street itself.
